Community Safety.

Community Safety Plan.
Every Queenslander deserves to be safe and feel safe and the Miles Labor Government has made keeping Queenslanders safe a top priority.
That’s why one of my first actions as Premier was to deliver a police helicopter for Townsville.
Our Community Safety Plan puts victims first, detains offenders, backs police, and tackles the causes of crime, and will deliver:
900 more police personnel – this is in addition to the 2025 extra police personnel we will deliver by 2025.
3000 more metal detecting wands – this builds on our knives crackdown through Jack’s Law which is now being adopted by other states.
1000 more tasers – this new equipment will save lives and help police to do their jobs.
Two new helicopters – Polair capability will significant enhance police operations and support community safety in Cairns and the Far North, and Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay.
Funding for seniors to secure their homes – an expansion of a program to help eligible seniors to install security measures in their home.
More support for victims – this includes boosted victim support services, increased financial assistance to victims of crime, and a permanent Victim’s Commissioner.
New funding for early intervention programs for young people – we are using an evidence-based approach – if a program works we will adopt and expand it, if it doesn’t we will get rid of it.
Expansion of programs to keep young people in education – the evidence shows young people who stay in the education system are less likely to commit crimes, so we are supporting them to continue their schooling.
As everyone knows change takes time, but there are encouraging signs, the most recent data shows that we are putting more kids back on the right path.
We have delivered an 14% reduction in young serious repeat offenders in the six months to May this year.
Youth crime is down 6.3% overall across Queensland so far this year, compared to the same period (January to September) last year – with a 22% decrease in Townsville alone.
Our Community Safety Plan is working and we will continue to make sure Queenslanders are kept safe.
Our Record.
Our Community Safety Plan builds on a proven track record of supporting our police and tackling the causes of crime, including
-
Thousands of new police
-
Huge investment in police with new stations and upgraded stations
-
Delivering police the equipment they need to do their jobs
-
New laws targeting serious repeat offenders, knife crime, child sex offenders, hooning and bragging about crimes on social media
-
$1.9 billion for domestic, family and sexual violence reforms to support victims to escape violence and try to prevent family and sexual violence.
We’ll also deliver 10 new permanent police beats which builds on our commitment of 25 mobile police beats, to put police in communities where they are needed – a $30 million boost to frontline policing.
This includes a police beat at Mount Sheridan Shopping Centre, with Cairns and the Far North Queensland region receiving two mobile police beats, if re-elected.
This will help to facilitate better engagement and coordination of police and youth engagement services – targeting anti-social behaviour and supporting young people into prevention and early intervention services.
One crime is a crime too many, but we are on the right track, and we need to stay the course to keep Queenslanders safe.
A re-elected Miles Labor Government will continue to deliver the investment Queenslanders need to be safe and feel safe.
This is all at risk under the LNP.
When the LNP was last in Government, it slashed more than 300 police personnel and 180 corrections staff lost their jobs.
At the last election, the LNP’s policies would have seen 1,000 fewer police on Queensland’s streets.
The Opposition’s shadow Police Minister has admitted the LNP is playing politics with community safety in a cynical attempt to score points and votes.
The LNP pretends it has a silver bullet for community safety, but its cuts will just make things worse.
