Better Boating, Camping and Fishing.
We want more Queenslanders to get out and about to enjoy everything that makes our state great - from creeks, rivers, salt water, to our fish stocked dams.
We are committed to backing Queensland’s most popular and iconic pastimes – boating, camping and fishing.
Steven Miles has always been a big supporter of recreational fishing – his dad was a keen recreational fisher around Moreton Bay.
He delivered on his commitment to net free zones when he was Environment Minister and kept recreational fishing as an exempt activity while Health Minister.
As Premier, Steven wants Queensland to remain the best fishing destination in Australia.
He has committed to end gillnets in the Great Barrier reef from 2027 – as well as a reduction in gillnets in the Gulf – and the immediate removal of gillnets from dugong protection areas.
That builds on net-free zones in Cairns, Mackay and Rockhampton. Meaning bigger and better fish for anglers.
Now we will deliver a $100 million Better Boating Camping and Fishing Plan that includes:
-
Building new, accessible boat ramps and car parks to make it easier to get out on the water
-
Quadrupling grant funding to recreational fishing clubs
-
Free annual pass to fish in dams, with more stocked dams, more fish stock and better recreational facilities for campers and anglers alike
-
Net Free Zone Fund to establish new net free fishing zones in Moreton Bay after community consultation, to make more fish available for recreational fishers while protecting dugongs, turtles and dolphins
Our plan, will mean bigger fish biting more often and easier access to the water. Read more about it here.
Our Record.
Steven has already delivered:
-
$125 million – to help make the Great Barrier Reef, and Great Sandy Strait net free, and reduce gillnets and increase net free zones in the Gulf.
-
$30 million Marine Infrastructure Fund - to provide new and upgraded recreational boating facilities.
-
$250 000 Recreational Fishing Grants – for 21 different groups across Queensland that supported learn-to-fish, angler education, disability access, etc.
-
$100,000 Fish & SIP$ Competition
-
50 Fish Aggregating Devices - of various types deployed to increase the recreational fishing experiences, most located in south-east Queensland.
-
2000+ Women in Rec Fishing Network -to help promote, educate and encourage women to participate in recreational fishing.
-
400 recreational boating facility assets – that help meet the needs of the more than 314,000 boats in Queensland.
-
Tackling shark depredation – we know nobody likes their catch being taken by a shark, so that’s why we’re working on ways to reduce it.
This is all at risk under the LNP.
Only Labor will do what matters to preserve our environment and lifestyle now and for future generations.
The LNP will take Queensland backwards.
The LNP were the masterminds of some of the largest rollbacks of environmental protections since Federation.
When last in government, they cut 28 per cent of Queensland Boating and Fishing Patrol and Fisheries Queensland staff.
And, they voted against net free fishing zones in Cairns, Mackay and Rockhampton.
Queensland cannot risk David Crisafulli and an LNP government.
