Miles Doing What Matters: $400,000 boost for Bundaberg Angels

Updated: Oct 20

  • Miles Labor Government commits $400,000 to Angels Community Group in Bundaberg, if elected in October.

  • Builds on $20,000 donation in May to continue their community outreach, school lunch program and training.

  • Labor doing what matters to relieve pressure on Queensland households right around the state.

Premier Steven Miles has today joined Angels Community Group in Bundaberg to prepare meals for the vulnerable.

Angels Community Group run a mini mart that offers low-cost groceries that are not-accepted by supermarkets, and donated fruit and vegetables and bakery items that are given away for free. They also operate a café and second-hand clothing store.

Through these operations, Angels Community Group deliver essential training, skilling and employment services, in partnership with the government through Skilling Queenslanders for Work.

To relieve pressure on households and families, the Miles Labor Government is supporting community based organisations making a difference.

If elected, Labor will invest $400,000 towards the Angels Community Group to continue their community work, including providing homelessness support and free school lunches to kids in need.

This builds on a $20,000 donation provided by the Miles Labor Government in May.

Angels provides more than 300 lunches a week to local schools, giving young minds the fuel they need to learn and thrive.

Angels General Manager Jasmine Tasker is on Queensland’s School and Community Food Taskforce – a cross-sector group tasked with providing advice on options to support access to healthy food and drink for Queensland families.

The Taskforce was backed by $3 million in the 2024 State Budget.

Quotes attributable to Bundaberg MP Tom Smith:

“Cost of living is a real stress on local families, and that’s something the Miles Labor Government is tackling head on.

“We are so lucky to have an organisation here in Bundaberg, like Angels, that stand up for vulnerable Queenslanders.

“And I’m proud to back them with a $400,000 commitment so they can keep doing their life changing work.

“Only a Miles Labor Government is delivering for the Bundaberg region, and doing what matters to make a difference.”

Quotes attributable to Premier Steven Miles:

“Queenslanders are best known for providing a helping hand in times of need – Sue and Jasmine are that helping hand here in Bundaberg.

“I’m doing what matters to support their work through Angels, backed by $400,000 if my government is elected.

“I’ve seen firsthand how impactful their free lunches have been in helping young Queenslanders to concentrate in the classroom and have the food security they might be missing.

“That’s exactly what my universal free school lunch program will achieve, and I want to bring organisations like Angels along on that journey.”
