Miles Doing What Matters: Clean Energy Plan delivers for the Sunshine Coast

  • Investments in the energy system are helping to drive down energy bills, as part of Premier Steven Miles Cheaper Energy Plan.

  • Miles Labor Government Big Build delivers electrifying benefits to the Sunshine Coast.

  • Major investments include Borumba Pumped Hydro, local substations and a Local Renewable Energy Zone pilot.

  • On the Sunshine Coast region, more than 167,000 households have benefited from nation leading $1,000 energy bill rebates

Premier Steven Miles has today released his Cheaper Energy Plan – his vision to establish a new state-wide publicly owned energy retailer and lock in an energy price guarantee, if elected this month.

Through this retailer, all Queensland households and businesses will have access to more competition in the energy market, pushing down prices across the board.

And through an energy price guarantee, Labor has committed to keeping energy prices in Queensland lower than the average mainland national energy market price if elected this month.

The Miles Labor Government can make this guarantee because Queensland owns its energy assets, including major energy assets being built right now.

Sunshine Coast locals are benefiting from the government’s massive investment, delivering cheaper energy, more choice and an energy price guarantee.

On the Sunshine Coast, the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project will be delivered as part of its $107 billion Big Build program that’s funding massive investments in the region’s energy network.

The Miles Government’s commitment to delivering the $14.2 billion project will inject tens of millions into the regional economy and deliver 2,000 jobs during construction.

The 2,000 MW renewable energy project will provide the long-duration energy storage needed to reliably transition to Queensland’s future clean energy system.

It will play a key role in reaching Queensland’s renewable energy targets of 80 per cent renewables by 2035 and net zero emissions by 2050.

Environment, geotechnical studies and early works activities for the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project are ongoing.

The Miles Government’s $107 billion Big Build has a strong focus on projects to create a stronger energy future on the Sunshine Coast, including:

  • $40 million for a Local Renewable Energy Zone pilot in Caloundra;

  • $109.8 million for the Bells Creek Central Zone Substation to help support residential growth; and

  • $16.4 million for the Maleny Substation rebuild.

Quotes attributable to Premier Steven Miles:

“I have a plan for cheaper energy in the short and long term.

“It’s the only plan that will deliver Queenslanders with cleaner, cheaper, secure energy.

“On the Sunshine Coast, we’re building the Borumba Pumped Hydro as part of our mammoth $107 billion Big Build.

“Pumped hydro is the only technology that can provide the secure, low-cost renewable energy we need to deliver real action on climate change.

“There is no other technology that can be delivered soon enough, at scale, or for comparable cost.

“I’ve been upfront about my plan to deliver cheaper energy for Queenslanders, and it’s time the LNP did the same.”

Quotes attributable to Deputy Premier Cameron Dick:

“Only Labor is delivering record cost-of-living relief and a guarantee that household energy bills will be cheaper under Labor.

“That’s because of the strength of our plan to deliver the energy generation assets that will transform the state’s electricity system.

“Our $107 billion Big Build project is delivering the infrastructure that matters on the Sunshine Coast, which would all be at risk under the LNP.

“The LNP cannot say how they will pay for their commitments, leaving only one option – cuts.

“That’s their track record, and now they’ve committed to cutting cheaper energy for Queenslanders and cuts to frontline workers.”

Quotes attributable to Caloundra MP Jason Hunt:

“Every single household in my growing community deserves cheaper energy, and only the Miles Labor Government will deliver.

“We are building the infrastructure needed, from community batteries to massive pumped hydro storage, to put downward pressure on energy bills and put more money in the pockets of families.

“I will always do what matters for my community.”
