Our Transport Vision.
Doing what matters for Queensland.
The Miles Labor government wants to help you get where you need to be sooner, so you can spend less time travelling and more time with the ones you love. Unprecedented population growth means there are more cars on our roads than ever before. And too often, the option of public transport has been too expensive or too inconvenient for Queenslanders to leave their car at home.
That’s why we have a long-term plan to make every trip easier, faster and cheaper – whether you’re travelling by car or public transport.
Putting money back in your pocket, easing household costs and making travel cheaper and easier.
Cheaper and better public transport.
By reducing public transport fares to just 50 cents, we are helping Queenslanders save thousands.
This nation-leading initiative won’t just put money back in your pocket, it will also reduce congestion by taking cars off the road.
We’re also halving the price of Air Train tickets and helping 122,000 kids with the School Transport Assistance Scheme.
“People who live in the outer suburbs, who have to travel the furthest, in places like Mango Hill where I live with my family, shouldn’t have to pay more for public transport.”
Bringing down the cost of owning a car.
The costs associated with owning and driving a car can add up. But most Queenslanders, especially in the regions, need a car to get around.
The Miles Labor Government is taking pressure off household budgets by reducing car rego by 20%, funded by making mining billionaires pay their fair share.
More competition means cheaper petrol and diesel. Multinational oil companies are hiking up petrol prices and hurting Queenslanders.
That’s why the Miles Labor Government is taking action to drive down fuel prices directly at the bowser.
If elected in October the Miles Labor Government will take on multinational companies by:
-
Banning petrol stations from raising the price of petrol more than once a day Requiring petrol stations to release their prices a day in advance
-
Capping petrol price increases to no more than 5 cents a litre daily, on a trial basis in consultation with the RACQ
-
Using planning call-in powers and access to government owned land to provide a more level playing field for independents and smaller retailers to increase competition and drive down prices.
If elected in October, the Miles Labor Government will establish 12 publicly owned fuel stations to deliver greater competition.
We will determine where new competition is most needed, and will work alongside independent retailers.
We will operate them on a cost recovery basis. They will sell petrol and diesel and will also have electric vehicle fast chargers.
“Queensland is the most decentralised state, the majority of Queenslanders need a car to get around. I want to make it a bit cheaper to drive.”
Expanding our road and rail infrastructure.
The Miles Labor team has a vision for our future infrastructure and are making a record investment as part of our Transport Big Build to deliver better transport infrastructure for Queenslanders.
Our most recent budget includes more than $37 billion in transport infrastructure projects - more than $20 billion of this is being spent outside the Brisbane area.
And we will guarantee that at least 55 per cent will always be outside the Brisbane area.
We are making public transport more accessible by delivering Cross River Rail, Sunshine Coast Direct Rail, the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail expansion and Gold Coast Light Rail – and this is just the start!
The Miles Labor Government is building better roads including more than $6 billion in Bruce Highway upgrades, delivering the Inland Freight Route and improving Cape York road infrastructure. That’s in addition to ring road projects in Townsville, Rockhampton and Mackay. We are expanding Park “n” Rides, improving active transport, delivering more bus services and we’ve increased bus driver wages.
If elected in October, a Miles Labor Government will build two new bridges - a new Barron River Bridge near Cairns and a new Bribie Island Bridge.
New independent transport authority.
If elected in October, the Miles Labor Government will create a new independent transport authority to align planning for trains, buses and ferries.
An independent authority will deliver more frequent and better integrated services, like lining up buses and trains so services are more convenient.
Making our transport future in Queensland.
Our long term plan for transport isn’t just about getting you where you need to be, it’s driving forward Queensland’s economy.
The Miles Labor Government is bringing manufacturing home. We are making 65 trains in Maryborough as well as 200 new locally made buses in South-East Queensland.
That’s in addition to making 400 new zero emission buses in Queensland to help kickstart Queensland’s clean energy manufacturing revolution.
Our investment in new transport infrastructure will support 28,000 direct jobs, increase productivity including for freight, help connect our regions to new and growing businesses and support tourism.
This is all at risk under the LNP.
The LNP have no vision for the future of Queensland’s transport network.
When they were last in government they sacked 700 road building staff, 1,700 rail workers and cut $1.6 billion from transport and roads funding.
Now, they have an infrastructure hitlist of $10 billion worth of projects and want to hand billions back to multinational mining companies.
These cuts would mean that over 30,000 Queenslanders would lose their jobs.
David Crisafulli ran a business into the ground and left Queenslanders out of pocket. He would do the same thing to Queensland. We just can’t risk the LNP.
